The Menace of Pedestrian Crossings in India

0

In the bustling urban landscapes of India, where vehicles jostle for every inch of road space, the simple act of crossing the street can often feel like a high-stakes gamble.

While traffic congestion and vehicular safety rightly garner significant attention, the plight of pedestrians attempting to navigate this chaotic environment often goes overlooked.

The sheer menace of pedestrian crossings in India is a stark reality, contributing to a tragic toll of injuries and fatalities, and highlighting a systemic failure to prioritize the safety of those most vulnerable on our roads.

Several factors contribute to this perilous situation. Firstly, a severe lack of dedicated and safe pedestrian infrastructure is rampant. Marked crosswalks are often absent, poorly maintained, or simply ignored by drivers.

Foot overbridges and underpasses, where they exist, are frequently inconvenient, poorly lit, and inaccessible for the elderly, children, and those with disabilities. This forces pedestrians to risk life and limb darting across busy roads with little to no protection.

Secondly, a deeply ingrained disregard for traffic rules and pedestrian rights among many drivers exacerbates the problem. Honking incessantly, speeding through intersections, and failing to yield to pedestrians are commonplace occurrences.

The “might is right” attitude often prevails, with larger vehicles intimidating those on foot. This aggressive driving culture creates a hostile environment for anyone attempting to cross the road safely.

Furthermore, poor enforcement of existing traffic regulations compounds the issue. Even where pedestrian crossings are marked, the lack of consistent policing means that drivers face little consequence for flouting the rules. This emboldens reckless behavior and undermines any semblance of order on the roads.

The consequences of this systemic neglect are devastating. India consistently reports alarmingly high numbers of pedestrian fatalities in road accidents. Families are shattered, and communities bear the burden of preventable loss. Beyond the tragic loss of life, countless others suffer serious injuries, leading to long-term disabilities and economic hardship.

The menace of pedestrian crossings also has a significant impact on the walkability and overall quality of life in our cities. Fearful of navigating the treacherous roads, people are less likely to walk or cycle, contributing to increased vehicle dependence, traffic congestion, and air pollution.

This creates a vicious cycle that further degrades the urban environment.
Addressing this critical issue requires a multi-pronged approach. Investing in robust pedestrian infrastructure is paramount.

This includes constructing well-designed and accessible foot overbridges and underpasses at strategic locations, ensuring clearly marked and well-maintained crosswalks with pedestrian signals, and implementing traffic calming measures in pedestrian-heavy zones.

Simultaneously, a concerted effort is needed to improve driver behavior. This involves rigorous enforcement of traffic laws, including hefty penalties for failing to yield to pedestrians. Public awareness campaigns are crucial to educate drivers about pedestrian rights and the importance of responsible road behavior. Incorporating pedestrian safety into driving curricula and licensing processes can also contribute to a long-term shift in attitudes.

Furthermore, urban planning needs to prioritize pedestrian safety and walkability. Designing streets with pedestrian needs in mind, creating dedicated pedestrian zones, and ensuring safe and convenient connections between public transport hubs and residential areas are essential steps.

The safety of pedestrians is not just a matter of infrastructure and regulations; it reflects the collective responsibility of a society to protect its most vulnerable members. By acknowledging the menace of pedestrian crossings in India and taking decisive action to address its root causes, we can move towards creating safer, more livable, and more equitable urban spaces for all. The time to prioritize the perilous pavement is long overdue.

Satisfied That I’ve Made Another Good Movie

Nandamuri Kalyan Ram’s latest film is “Arjun S/O Vaijayanthi.” Lady Superstar Vijayashanti has played a powerful role. Directed by Pradeep Chilukuri, this film is produced by Ashok Vardhan Muppa and Sunil Balusu under the banners of Ashoka Creations and NTR Arts.

Speaking about the movie, which was released on April 18th, Vijayashanti said
I have the satisfaction of having made a good movie after a long time. I played a very powerful role. This film has fulfilled what the audience wanted to see from Ramulamma and Vijayashanti. Action is a kind of challenge for me now, but I did it. Everyone is appreciating my action performance.

Everyone has performed their roles wonderfully. This film strongly showcases the bond between parents and sons and the respect they deserve. The director has handled this story perfectly.

I am very happy when many women called and say that the movie is wonderful and that the mother-son emotion is captivating. I have information that some people couldn’t watch it due to exams. They are saying that they will all go from tomorrow. From tomorrow, the audience’s response will be even more amazing.

Away from Drama Close to Naturalness Sodara Heroine Arati Gupta

‘Sodara’ is a film starring Sampoornesh Babu and Sanjosh as heroes. Manmohan Menam Palli is the director for ‘Sodara,’ which showcases the bond between brothers. Chandra Chagalam is producing this film under the banner of Can Entertainments.

Arati Gupta is playing the heroine in this film, which is set to release on the 25th of this month. On this occasion, Arati Gupta interacted with reporters on Tuesday. Here are the highlights of that conversation.

“Born and raised in Chandigarh, I am now settled in Mumbai. I have acted in several Bollywood films before. However, ‘Sodara’ is my debut film in Telugu. I agreed to do this film because I liked the story. The beauty of the script is that it’s a light-hearted family drama.

You can watch this movie with your friends, family, or anyone. I also really liked my character in this film. I appear as an innocent village girl. A simple village girl. An educated girl. Innocent and dignified – that’s the character.

This role, which is close to my real life, will definitely be liked by everyone,” she said

Sarangapani film is special
Producer Sivalenka Krishna Prasad

Under the banner of the prominent production house Sridevi Movies, ‘Sarangapani Jatakam’ is a film directed by Mohanakrishna Indraganti and produced by Sivalenka Krishna Prasad. Priyadarshi and Roopa Koduvayur star as the lead pair. The movie is scheduled for release on April 25th. On this occasion, producer Sivalenka Krishna Prasad interacted with the media.

* ‘Sarangapani Jatakam’ has all kinds of elements like action, suspense, thriller, comedy, and love. When Indraganti Garu narrated the story, I was very excited. This film will make everyone in the theater laugh heartily. The void of not having done a complete entertainer like the ones with Jandhyala Garu has now been filled. Some films remain in the audience’s memory forever. ‘Sarangapani Jatakam’ will be one such film that will be remembered for a long time.

* After ‘Gentleman’ and ‘Sammohanam,’ our combination is going to deliver a hat-trick hit. The story and screenplay written by Mohanakrishna will captivate everyone. It will appeal to family audiences as well as the youth. We have worked very hard on this film. We are releasing it a bit late with the intention of getting the right theaters. We waited until now to get a good season.

* The characters come as part of the story. It doesn’t feel like anything has been forcibly inserted anywhere. Vennela Kishore, Viva Harsha, Naresh Garu, Avasarala Srinivas – all the characters make you laugh wonderfully.

* After listening to the story, we felt Darshi would be good. Now, with the release of the movie ‘Court,’ Priyadarshi’s image has increased further. He appeared serious in ‘Court.’ But in this film, he will make everyone laugh a lot. Priyadarshi has done complete justice to this film.

* Be it a love story like ‘Sammohanam,’ a film like ‘Gentleman,’ or handling comedy, everyone knows Indraganti Garu’s mark. Indraganti Garu’s comedy timing in this film will be on the next level. This film will be worth every penny.

* Currently, we are discussing a few stories. I am very afraid of sequels. That’s why I stay away from them. But if Balakrishna Garu starts work on the sequel to ‘Aditya 369,’ I will be a part of it. I really liked the two stories narrated by the directors of ‘Yashoda.’ A story narrated by Pavan Sadineni also seemed very interesting. I am going to do another film with Mohanakrishna Indraganti Garu again

Hero Priyadarshini on Sarangapani

Sarangapani Jatakam’ is a common man’s story filled with emotions like ‘Mallesham’, ‘Balagam’, and ‘Court’ – Hero Priyadarshi

With a string of successes, Priyadarshi is riding high right now. His next film as the lead is ‘Sarangapani Jatakam’, produced under the prestigious Sridevi Movies banner by Sivalenka Krishna Prasad and directed by Mohana Krishna Indraganti. The film is set to release on April 25. On this occasion, Priyadarshi interacted with the media. Here’s what he shared about the film:

Q: After a hit like ‘Court’, you’re coming back with ‘Sarangapani Jatakam’. What can we expect from this film?
I heard the story of ‘Sarangapani Jatakam’ last year. It was supposed to release at the end of last year but got delayed a bit. Now it’s releasing on April 25. I’m really happy to come back with this film right after a hit like ‘Court’. I’m confident and not under any pressure.

Q: Do you personally believe in horoscopes like the character in this film?
Not to the extent shown in the movie, but I do believe in them to some extent. In this industry, nothing is really under our control. We just try to make good cinema, but the result is not in our hands. We had planned to release the film earlier, but considering business aspects and theatre availability, we decided on April 25.

Q: What message does the film try to convey?
We’re not saying one should believe or shouldn’t believe in horoscopes. But we are showing what happens when someone imposes their beliefs on others. We haven’t taken sides in the story.

Q: You seem to prefer emotional stories. Why is that?
I believe common man characters reach a wider audience. Be it ‘Mallesham’ or ‘Sarangapani’, these are people we see around us. Their journeys are often painful. Stories like ‘Mallesham’, ‘Balagam’, ‘Court’, and ‘Sarangapani’ are all rooted in our surroundings. In this film, I play a young man who strongly believes in horoscopes.

Q: You started with comedy roles. Now you’re doing full-length comedy entertainers. How do you see that transition?
Making people laugh is very difficult these days. Indraganti has great comic timing. I’ve never played a role like this before. It feels very fresh. I believe the character and the film will connect with everyone.

Q: What about your character and dialect in this film?
So far, I’ve mostly spoken in the Telangana dialect. But in this film, I speak in the Andhra dialect. I tried to follow Indraganti sir’s style. He created a separate track and timing for me, and I think audiences will like it.

Q: How was the experience working with legends like Tanikella Bharani, Naresh, and Avasarala Srinivas?
They are all amazing actors and true legends. Vennela Kishore is a fantastic artist. Viva Harsha has great timing. Despite being seniors, everyone was very friendly and we had fun during the shoot.

Q: Did you feel any pressure as the lead actor in this film?
It was Indraganti sir who worked the hardest for this film. More than me, it was his effort. I just followed his direction on set. I never felt any pressure.

Q: Did you check your horoscope before entering the film industry?
Yes, before I entered the industry, astrologers said I would never become an actor. But I didn’t care about any of that. My mother got my horoscope checked out of concern. I came into the industry with faith in myself and my work.

Q: Is this a story-driven or character-driven film?
Some films revolve around characters. In ‘Court’, not just me, all characters stood out. It got great word-of-mouth and became a blockbuster. People don’t come to the theatres just because I’m in a film—they come because they believe the film will have a strong point or content. Today’s audiences are very clear about what to watch and what to skip. Only meaningful films are working.

Q: Do you self-reflect when a film flops?
Absolutely. When a film fails, I always introspect. I look at where I went wrong, what could’ve been done differently, and make sure to be more careful next time.

Q: Do you long for a mass hero image?
There are many action heroes in our industry. Mass commercial entertainers pull great collections too. But look at Nani—he did ‘Dasara’ and then ‘Hi Nanna’, and both were hits. Earlier, even Chiranjeevi, Rajinikanth, and Balakrishna followed this format—doing all kinds of films and impressing everyone. I want to do the same. If Srikanth Odela is ready, I’ll pick up a sword! (laughs)

Q: What was your reaction when Indraganti sir narrated this story to you?
I used to dream of just taking a picture with Indraganti sir. But he came to me with a story! The moment I heard it, I felt it was amazing. He called it the story of a horoscope-crazy guy and told me the title ‘Sarangapani Jatakam’. I loved the title too. I told him, “Sir, it’s an amazing title.” I’ll never forget my first day shooting with him. I hope everyone gets a chance to work with Indraganti sir.

Q: How was your experience working with producer Sivalenka Krishna Prasad?
He’s a great producer. He produced classics like ‘Aditya 369’. Even now, he respectfully addresses newcomers like me as “sir.” He’s very humble. I consider myself lucky to have worked under his banner.

Q: Are there any premiere shows planned for the film?
We’re going to Vizag for ‘Sarangapani Jatakam’ promotions. We’re doing events there and will be organizing premiere shows too. We want to show the film a bit early—if people like it, they can come to the theatres. Our film will entertain everyone with laughter.

Q: Do you think the audience’s taste has changed now?
Yes, today’s audience prefers films with solid content. They love stories of the common man. In films like ‘Lucky Bhaskar’ and ‘Pushpa’, the hero is a common man who rises. Even Chiranjeevi sir did many such films in the past and won hearts.

Q: What are your upcoming projects?
I’m doing a film called ‘Premante’ with a new director under Asian Cinemas. I’m also doing another project titled ‘Mitramandali’ under Geetha Arts, produced by Bunny Vas. I’m listening to a few more scripts. I want to focus more on films with strong roles.
