‘Never accept it’: Ukraine’s Volodymyr Zelensky defies Donald Trump as peace talks take shape

0

Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky has delivered an extraordinarily pointed message to European leaders during a speech in Germany, strongly implying that the United States can no longer be trusted to oppose Russia under the administration of Donald Trump.

“Many leaders have talked about a Europe that needs its own military. An army. An Army of Europe. And I believe the time has come. The armed forces of Europe must be created,” said Mr Zelensky.

“This is not just about increasing defence spending as a GDP ratio. People and weapons don’t come for free. It’s about people realising they need to defend their own. Their own home.

“Europe must decide its own future.”

The fear, in Ukraine, is that US President Donald Trump intends to negotiate a peace deal directly with Vladimir Putin, cutting Ukrainians out of the process.

“Ukraine will never accept deals made behind our backs without our involvement,” he said.

How to keep your private conversations private

Signal is one of a number of relatively simple tools that can be used to help keep conversations secure.Signal is designed to never collect or store any sensitive information. Signal messages and calls cannot be accessed by Signal or other third parties because they are always end-to-end encrypted, private, and secure.

There are a number of tech platforms that advertise encryption services for privacy — including iMessage and WhatsApp — but data security experts largely agree that Signal is the gold standard.

Signal looks like a regular messaging app for texting and making phone calls. But it’s owned by a non-profit, not a private company, and the app is end-to-end encrypted by default. That means that the content of a conversation is scrambled when it’s traveling between the sender and receiver, so no one except the parties to the conversation can see it.

“If you show up with a warrant or a subpoena (to Signal), they have almost nothing about you that they can hand over,” said Eva Galperin, director of cybersecurity at the Electronic Frontier Foundation. On non-encrypted messaging apps, an employer or law enforcement could potentially force a platform to hand over a user’s conversations via subpoena.

End-to-end encryption itself isn’t unique among messaging apps, but certain apps that offer encryption, like WhatsApp, may still have access to non-encrypted contacts and other accounts you’ve messaged, whereas Signal’s builders can’t see that information, according to Gillmor.

And whether you use Signal or WhatsApp, experts advise turning on the “disappearing messages” feature that allows users to auto-delete conversations after a set period of time — hours, or days, depending on what a user selects — so that the conversations might not be accessible even if someone else got their hands on a user’s phone.

Karnataka’s critical information infrastructure has come under attack again

Kaveri 2.0, a web portal that was launched in 2023 to streamline property registrations in Karnataka, came under a distributed denial of service (DDoS) attack carried out through Artificial Intelligence (AI)-powered bots recently.

The DDoS attack crippled the portal, bringing property registrations across Karnataka almost to a halt for many days in January and February, possibly causing huge revenue losses to the State exchequer.

This is not the first time that the State’s critical information infrastructure has come under attack.

In 2017, the Karnataka State Data Centre fell victim to the WannaCry ransomware attack, which spreads by exploiting vulnerabilities in the Windows operating system. In 2019, the State’s e-procurement portal was hacked leading to a theft of ₹11.5 crore.

In 2022, the systems of the National Institute of Mental Health and Neurosciences were attacked. However, as the DDoS attack shows, no lessons seem to have been learned from earlier attacks and the gaps identified in the State’s response have still not been filled.

3 skills that can increase your salary significantly in 2025

0

Working harder is not enough to get a raise or promotion. That tactic might have worked years ago, but in today’s workplace, working hard, having a degree, or even graduating from a certain pedigree of school, doesn’t make much of a difference anymore. It’s the professionals who master in-demand skills and position themselves strategically who become irreplaceable in their industries.

However, there are professionals who win in their careers and are consistently moving up the ladder regardless of the employer they work for, because they learn high-income skills that make them stand out and attract the attention of other employers and even potential clients at a freelance level.

These skills enable you to multiply your salaries, and these are the same skills that you can easily learn and apply to your role/career too:

1. AI Skills
Understanding generative AI, AI agents, and AI basics within the context of your role is one of the most important skills you can master in 2025. AI is so crucial to business success that employers are willing to pay a nearly 50% premium for workers who have AI skills.

2. Social Influence
Another important skill for you to learn so you can multiply your salary is social influence.

If you were to quickly browse your name on Google, what does your digital footprint say about you? How does your personal brand portray you as a leader or industry expert on your social media platforms?

Building authority within your industry through your LinkedIn profile, content creation, public speaking engagements, guest blogging, and your website or blog can attract high paying opportunities because people will start to view you as the go-to industry expert.

3. Analytical Thinking Skills

Analytical thinking enables you to make data-driven decisions in your role at work, and in your business if you’re a freelancer or entrepreneur, which ensures you’re formulating strategies based on actual facts instead of guesswork because you’re able to read the room. This increases your chances of financial success through increased revenue.

Critical thinking helps you uncover gaps in productivity, silos that might be limiting business growth, and any inefficient practices, reasoning from cause to effect.
