DeepSeek could mark a turning point for Silicon Valley on AI

0

Silicon Valley is coming to grips this week with the realization that creating an advanced artificial intelligence model may no longer be as specialized a task as was once believed.

The wakeup call came in the form of DeepSeek, a year-old Chinese start-up whose free, open-source AI model, R1, is more or less on par with advanced models from American tech giants — and it was built for a fraction of the cost, apparently with less advanced chips and it demands far less data center power to run.

Until now, the widely accepted wisdom in the US tech world was that American tech giants could stay ahead by spending billions of dollars, amassing advanced chips and building out huge data centers (despite the environmental cost). Essentially, because they’re among the richest companies in the world, they believed they could throw more resources at the problem than anyone else and come out on top.

OpenAI’s largest investor, Microsoft, is investigating whether DeepSeek trained its model off of stolen OpenAI data, Bloomberg reported. Even if the company achieved its efficiency revolution with some malfeasance, DeepSeek’s achievements have lit a fire under Silicon Valley’s AI industry.

“All those other frontier model labs — OpenAI, Anthropic, Google — are going to build far more efficient models based on what they’re learning from DeepSeek,” said Gil Luria, head of technology research at investment firm D.A. Davidson. “And you’ll be able to use those at a fraction of the price that you can now, because it’s going to be a fraction of the cost to run those models.”

And even if DeepSeek forces a short-term rethinking of the business model Silicon Valley had envisioned for AI, people who believe the technology will change the world should be glad for the advancement, Kass said.

“We are freaked out fairly, I suppose, because we thought we had global AI supremacy, when, in fact, we should be celebrating,” Kass said. “Because this is one more piece of evidence that the AI revolution is going to democratize technology and it’s going to be fairly distributed.”

A Golden Opportunity
I will always Cherish Child artist Gagana Geethika

0

Child artist Gagana Geethika who played the role of Payal in “Daku Maharaj”, is receiving immense praise.

The young actress, Gagana Geethika, says, “Getting the opportunity to act in Daku Maharaj itself was a great privilege. Sharing screen space with Balayya (Nandamuri Balakrishna) and receiving his compliments is something I’ll never forget.” Reminding us of the saying, “Small bird… but with a mighty chirp,” this little firecracker first caught the industry’s attention at the tender age of four-and-a-half through TikTok videos. She made her acting debut as a child artist in the film Lawyer Vishwanath. Her second movie was followed by performances in RRR, Narappa, 18 Pages, and Tellavarithe Guruvaram, where she honed her talent by portraying the younger versions of heroines.

Gagana further impressed audiences with her roles in 90’s Middle-Class Biopic, The Great Indian Suicide, and Prema Vimanam. She is currently playing the role of Tamannaah’s younger version in Odela Railway Station-2. While continuing to act in films, Gagana ensures her education is not neglected. She considers her father, Sriteja, as her inspiration. Passionate about cinema, Sriteja entered the industry while supporting his family. To pursue his passion, he ventured into the animation field and worked towards establishing his mark as an actor. Sriteja played the lead role in the movie Hyderabad Dreams and gained recognition with supporting roles as a hero’s friend in various films. He also earned a good reputation with TV serials like Krishnathulasi and Yedaloyalo Indradanussu.

Balancing tradition and modernity, Gagana is learning classical Kuchipudi dance while also practicing western dance styles. She expresses her overwhelming happiness over Daku Maharaj becoming the biggest blockbuster of Balayya’s career, and particularly cherishes her role as Payal, which serves as a key turning point in the story. Grateful to Balayya for his kindness and encouragement, and to director Bobby for giving her this opportunity, Gagana promises to continue growing as a performer. Let’s wish her all the best for a bright future!

A SATYA CONFESSION TO MYSELF
—— Ram Gopal Varma

0

By the time SATYA was rolling to an end , while watching it 2 days back for 1st time after 27 yrs, I started choking with tears rolling down my cheeks and I dint care if anyone would see
The tears were not just for the film, but were more for what happened since

Making a film is like giving birth to a child originating from throes of passion without truly realising what kind of a child I am giving birth to
That’s because a film is made in in bits and pieces without one really knowing what’s being made and when it is ready the concentration is on what others are saying about it and after that ,whether it’s a hit or not, I  move on too obsessed with what’s next to reflect and understand the beauty of what i myself created

Till 2 days back I ignored the countless inspirations it sparked by dismissing it as just another step in my journey towards an objective less destination

Coming back to the hotel after the screening of SATYA, and sitting in the dark i I din’t understand why with all my so called intelligence, I did not  set this film as a benchmark for whatever I should  do in the future
I also realised I didn’t just cry for the tragedy in that film but I also cried in joy for that version of myself  .. And I cried in guilt for my betrayals of all those who trusted me due to SATYA

I became drunk not on alcohol but on my own success and my arrogance though I didn’t know this till 2 days back
When the bright lights of a RANGEELA  or a SATYA blinded me, i lost my vision and that explains my meandering into making films for shock value or for gimmick effect or to make a vulgar display of my technical wizardry or various other things equally meaningless and in that careless process,  forgetting such a simple truth that technique utmost can elevate a given content but it can’t carry it  .

Some of my later films might have been successful but I do not believe that any of them had the same honesty and integrity which is in SATYA

My very unique vision that drove me to create something path breaking in cinema also blinded me to the value of what i myself made and I became a man hurriedly running so fast looking up towards the horizon.  that I forgot to look down at the garden I’d planted beneath my feet , and that explains my various falls from grace

I obviously can’t make any amends now for what I already did , but i promised myself 2 nights back while wiping away my tears , that every film I make from now onwards will be made with a reverence towards why I wanted to become a director in the 1st place

I might not be able to make a film like SATYA ever again , but not even having an intention to do so is an unpardonable crime against Cinema

I don’t mean that I should keep making films like SATYA but irrespective of the genre or the subject matter the least it should have is the sincerity of SATYA

When Francis Coppola was asked by an interviewer about a film he made after GODFATHER, whether it will be as good , I could see him squirming because i could see that it din’t occur to him

No one asked me about any film I was about to make post SATYA whether it will be as good,  but what’s worse is  that I din’t ask myself

I so wish I could go back in time and made this one cardinal rule for myself , that before deciding on any film to make , I should  watch SATYA once again… If I followed that rule I am sure I would not have made 90% of the films I made since then

I truly mean this as a wake up call to every film maker , who just gets carried away in self indulgence due to his own state of mind at any given moment without measuring it against the standards set by either themselves or others

Finally now i took a vow that whatever little of my life is left , I want to spend it sincerely and create something as worthy as SATYA and this truth I swear on SATYA

Bank of Queensland to shut 14 more branches across Australia

0

The Bank of Queensland (BOQ) will shut 14 branches across Australia, in a move that union members are calling “despicable”.

Those branches — one in Western Australia, three in New South Wales, four in Victoria and six in Queensland — will close from February 19 to 27 this year.

“BOQ has made the difficult decision to close 14 branches as we continue to simplify operations, and more customers embrace digital banking,” a BOQ spokesperson said.

The changes come just months after BOQ told shareholders it would axe 400 jobs across the country in order to simplify and digitise operations.
