How did it feel to act with Shivaji again after nearly 20 years?

It has been almost 20 years since Shivaji garu and I acted together. When I was first approached, I assumed it was a family drama. But when I learned it was an out-and-out comedy entertainer, I felt happy because comedy is my favorite genre. It’s a film that connects with everyone. The comedy genre appeals to all age groups. Along with humor, the film has an interesting twist and thrilling elements. It falls under the dark comedy genre — essentially a comedy crime thriller. I felt a unique vibe the moment I heard the story.

What is your role like in the film?

I play the character Uttara. I’ve never seen myself in such a role before. Even I felt very excited when I heard about it. Mine is a strong character who dominates even a powerful role like Mangapathi’s. Shivaji garu encouraged me a lot. I really liked my role. The scenes between Shivaji and me will be highly hilarious.

Was the film initially planned for OTT? Now it’s releasing in theatres?

Initially, it was planned for a theatrical release. But at one stage, it was said that it would stream on OTT. Since I am used to seeing myself on the big screen, I was a little disappointed when I heard that. However, many prominent people who watched the film felt that it deserved a theatrical release, so it is now coming to theatres. My daughter was very upset when she heard it might release on OTT. She always wants to watch my films on the silver screen. Now that it’s releasing in theatres, we are very happy.

What are your expectations for the film?

The trailer has been well received and everyone says they liked it. The film will be very entertaining. It’s a movie that will satisfy all sections of the audience. People will walk out with the satisfaction of having watched a good film.

Have you noticed any changes in Shivaji?

Cinema is his passion. He constantly thinks about how to take the film to the audience. He loves cinema in every way. Compared to earlier, his love for films has grown even more now.

About director Sudheer Sriram?

He wrote the story very well and executed it with great clarity. He is a director with clear vision. He has made the film very hilarious and extracted exactly the kind of performance he wanted from the actors. He doesn’t compromise and knows exactly what he wants. He is a talented filmmaker.

Is there anything special about your role in this film?

Laya is often associated with emotional roles — making others cry or crying on screen. But in this film, I make others cry! It’s a role I thoroughly enjoyed. It’s a somewhat selfish character who mainly thinks about her husband and family. She wants her husband to always be well and happy — that’s her mindset.

What kind of roles would you like to do?

I’m not particular that I must only do lead roles. If lead roles come, I’ll do them. But even if it’s a small role, I’ll accept it if I like the story and my character. The scope for female roles is limited, so I want to choose the best among what comes my way. I’ve already done soft roles, so I now want to do strong characters. Though I may look soft, when I have to say something, I say it strongly. In Vadhalu, audiences will see another side of me.

Your upcoming films?

In Vadhalu, I’m playing the wife of Jagapathi Babu. I’m also doing a film with Srikanth, directed by Nageswara Reddy. It’s a socio-fantasy film in the style of Yamaleela. Vadhalu is a psychological thriller. I’m trying different genres.

Actor Vijay Deverakonda, who recently entered married life, visited his native village Thummanpeta along with his wife Rashmika Mandanna and family members. Thumman Peta, located in Balmur mandal of Nagarkurnool district, is Vijay’s hometown. After his wedding, this was his first visit to the village with his family.

The villagers of Thummanpeta gave a grand welcome to Vijay and his family. Vijay performed the Satyanarayana Swamy Vratham with Rashmika at his ancestral home in the village. The family also hosted a wedding feast for the local residents.

What is your background?

I am from Kadapa. My father was a postmaster. I have loved films since childhood and always dreamed of gaining recognition like a film celebrity. After watching Happy Days, I completed my engineering. I’ve been in the film industry since 2015 and worked in the direction department for several films. I worked on Evaru, starring Adivi Sesh. The film’s director Venkat Ramji (Ramji) is my mentor and like a godfather to me. Because of him, I stand before you today as a director.

Why did you choose Shivaji garu as the hero?

When I saw Shivaji garu in 90s films, he reminded me of my father. While narrating stories, I felt I should approach him with this one. When I narrated Saampradayini Suppini Suddapoosani, he immediately said he would produce it himself. That made me extremely happy. He also suggested narrating it to the ETV team. Nithin garu and Sai Krishna garu approved it instantly, and finally Bapineedu garu also came on board. That’s how the journey of this film began. Thanks to Shivaji garu, we completed the film quickly.

What kind of story is this?

This is a crime comedy. It will have a style similar to films directed by Nelson Dilipkumar. Like Kolamaavu Kokila and Doctor, it blends dark comedy with a thrilling backdrop. The trailer clearly reflects this tone. I personally love dark comedy — it’s close to my style. It’s definitely a film the whole family can enjoy in theatres, offering both fun and emotion. After watching it, audiences will feel they’ve seen a complete entertainer.

Initially, it was planned for OTT release. Why shift to theatres?

We originally planned it for theatrical release, and the ETV team also agreed. However, after Little Hearts and Raju Weds Rambayi released in theatres, ETV Win felt they were missing out on exclusive original content and considered a direct OTT release. But unexpectedly, with a suggestion from Anil Ravipudi, we decided to bring it to theatres. I was worried I might miss the emotional moment of seeing my name on the big screen for my first film. Now I’m very happy it’s releasing in theatres.

How are the characters in the film?

Every character has been perfectly cast, each with a unique dimension. During shooting, everyone on set used to laugh while filming the scenes. After the first 20 minutes, the story takes a completely different turn.

Is Shivaji’s role similar to his 90s characters?

There is no connection at all. In this film, he plays a very energetic character. For me, on-screen Shivaji perfectly fit the role of Sriram. Even the film’s title was suggested by Shivaji garu. His involvement has added great value to the project.

How involved was Shivaji in the making?

He didn’t make any changes to the story. He delivered dialogues in his own style and was properly involved in the songs. The “Paya” song was done based on his suggestion. His advice was very valuable. The story you’ll see on screen is exactly what I narrated at the beginning. The script never changed.

What kind of theatrical experience will audiences have?

This is definitely a theatre-worthy film. Along with Anil Ravipudi garu, a few others have watched it. Everyone found the first half hilarious and thoroughly enjoyable, while the second half’s suspense gave them a thrilling experience. Whether in theatres or on OTT, the film will appeal to audiences. But I’m especially happy it’s releasing in theatres.

What kind of films do you want to direct personally?

I don’t want to limit myself to one genre. My next four stories are completely different — fantasy, science fiction, commercial entertainer, and even a mythological story. I don’t want to restrict myself to a single genre.

Is the film only about comedy? Does it have logic and story depth?

No one will say this film lacks story or logic after watching it. No scene will feel unnecessary. Every scene and every character has a logical purpose. From beginning to end, the film is perfectly structured. It’s a very carefully written script.
