What is Last Man in Tower about?

Set in an ageing Mumbai housing society, Last Man in Tower follows Yogesh Mishra (Manoj Bajpayee), a retired physics teacher who becomes the lone resident resisting a redevelopment deal accepted by his neighbours. While the offer promises a better future for many, Yogesh is determined to preserve the home and close-knit community he holds dear. But his stand soon turns him into an outsider among people he once considered friends, as his refusal is seen as standing in the way of their aspirations.

At the heart of the conflict is Sangita Puri (Divya Dutta), a neglected housewife whose hopes for a better life for her special-needs son put her at odds with Yogesh. As developer Dharmen Shah (Boman Irani) pushes the redevelopment forward, the society becomes a microcosm of a changing Mumbai, where the desire for progress increasingly clashes with the values of community and togetherness. Based on Aravind Adiga’s novel of the same name, the film offers a nuanced portrait of middle-class life, exploring the loneliness of standing by one’s convictions and the difficult choices that arise when preserving the past means confronting the dreams of others.

Is Yogesh Mishra simply afraid of change or is there more to his attachment to home? Do people make places special, or do places and the memories associated with them matter just as much? And when the past holds so much meaning, can the promise of a better future be enough to move us forward?

Why Last Man in Tower stands out:

• One man against all: At the heart of the film is a compelling conflict between one man and an entire community. As Yogesh Mishra stands alone against his neighbours to protect his home, the film explores the cost of holding on to one’s convictions when the people around you have chosen a different future.

• Changing human behaviour: What begins as a close-knit housing society gradually descends into hostility as differing interests and competing aspirations come to the fore. As Yogesh stands his ground, the people he once shared a community with begin to isolate him, turning against a man who is already alone. The film captures how quickly human behaviour can change when someone challenges what others hold dear, and how personal stakes can erode empathy, friendships and a sense of belonging.

• A conflict with no easy answers: Moving beyond a conventional battle between right and wrong, the film explores the competing needs, personal struggles and aspirations that shape each resident’s decision, inviting audiences to see the conflict from multiple perspectives.

• Manoj Bajpayee delivers a layered performance: As Yogesh Mishra, Bajpayee captures the contradictions of a man whose convictions, emotional attachments and growing isolation make him both compelling and deeply human. His nuanced portrayal brings out the vulnerability beneath Yogesh’s stubbornness and the loneliness that accompanies his stand.

• Divya Dutta brings emotional complexity to Sangita Puri: Driven by her own circumstances and hopes for a better future for her family, Sangita emerges as a formidable counterpoint to Yogesh. Dutta lends depth to a character whose motivations are understandable even when her actions are harsh and bold.

• Boman Irani adds nuance to the redevelopment battle: As developer Dharmen Shah, Irani brings a calm and persuasive presence to the conflict, making the confrontation more layered than a straightforward contest between a resident and a builder.

• The housing society becomes a character in itself: From everyday interactions and neighbourhood gossip to alliances, disagreements and social judgements, the film observes how quickly a familiar community can fracture when individual interests take precedence over collective bonds.

• A timely exploration of middle-class aspirations: By examining the pressures of urban redevelopment, financial insecurity and the pursuit of a better life, the film reflects the dilemmas faced by middle class residents caught between preserving what they know and embracing what lies ahead.

• An adaptation that invites reflection: Based on Aravind Adiga’s novel, the film raises larger questions about belonging, empathy and the limits of personal conviction, leaving audiences to reflect on what makes a place home and what happens when a community can no longer agree on its future.
Official Statements:

Director Ben Rekhi said , “It’s been a deeply fulfilling experience bringing Last Man in Tower to life with an incredible team top to bottom, from Rana Daggubati producing, to Sooni Taraporevala scripting, all based on Aravind Adiga’s incredible book. The most rewarding part has been witnessing the power of Manoj and Boman – two giants of cinema – working together for the first time in this film. Last Man in Tower is an urgent story about holding onto community and family through turbulent times, a story that has only become more relevant with time”.

Manoj Bajpayee said, “What drew me to Last Man in Tower was the complexity of Yogesh Mishra. He is a man who stands firmly by his beliefs, yet the story leaves you questioning whether he is right or wrong. As an actor, I found that ambiguity fascinating because it allowed me to explore the many layers of a character who is stubborn, vulnerable and deeply attached to his home and the memories it holds. In a city like Mumbai, where redevelopment has become part of everyday life and familiar buildings are constantly making way for new ones, the film looks at the human side of this change – what it means for families, the memories they leave behind and the uncertainty or excitement of starting afresh. I’m glad Last Man in Tower is coming to Hindi Zee 5, giving more viewers an opportunity to experience this story and reflect on what home truly means to them – is it the four walls or the people within it”.

Divya Dutta said, “What drew me to Last Man in Tower was the way it explores human behaviour and the choices people make without viewing them through a simple lens of right and wrong. Everyone has their own circumstances, aspirations and reasons for acting the way they do, which makes the conflict deeply relatable. I’m especially happy with the response to my role. While audiences may not have agreed with her aggression, they understood where she was coming from and what shaped her choices. As an actor, knowing that people could connect with her, even when they didn’t necessarily agree with her, is incredibly rewarding. I’m glad the film is now premiering on Hindi Zee 5, bringing this layered and thought-provoking story to a wider audience.”

Producer Rana Daggubatti of Spirit Media said , “Last Man in Tower is a deeply human story. There is something very compelling about the way it explores the choices we make and the things we hold on to. The entire ensemble of cast let by Manoj, Divya, Boman bring an incredible depth to their characters.”
